Roger Jenkins, Longman Storytelling Consultant
Roger is based in Singapore and has been telling stories since 1998, when he was invited to conduct a storytelling course for teachers by the Ministry of Education In-Service Training branch (Singapore). He was a keynote speaker at the Longman Storytelling Conference 2005 in Hong Kong and has run many storytelling workshops for teachers in Hong Kong since then.
Roger is also one of the storytellers featured in our Longman Storytelling CD-ROM series which will be launched in September 2006. Roger's CD-ROM is titled Drama into Stories.
At the conference, Roger provided some simple and practical ideas that teachers could take into the classroom almost immediately. He demonstrated the use of very simple 'puppets' and how they could be used to entertain, as well as teach, in the classroom. As with anything we want to do well, Roger also stressed the importance of practicing using the puppets and props, so that we become comfortable with them as useful tools in the classroom.
Roger also taught us that bringing drama into the classroom doesn't mean that a great deal of extra work is involved for the teacher. Drama can be done very simply by adding stories that bring out facial expressions, sounds and movement. He illustrated with examples by telling a few stories.
