Creative Power in Stories, April 22-23, 2006
The theme for our second annual Longman Storytelling Conference this year was Creative Power in Stories. The focus of this year's event was to show participants how they could use stories in their own classroom situations and bring the magic of storytelling to their students and help their students develop their creativity.
This year we added a new session called Storytelling Time for Students and invited teachers to bring their students to enjoy the live storytelling performance by the storytellers. We were happy to joined by students from Chai Wan Kok Catholic Primary School (am) and SKH All Saints' Primary School. We would like to extend a big 'thank you' to their teachers for their time and effort in offering their student this opportunity to attend this special event.
Almost 400 teachers from close to 300 different schools attended the two-day conference. This year we opened up the conference to pre-primary teachers as well as primary English teachers. It was a weekend filled with activity and we would like to thank everyone for attending. We look forward to seeing you at our next Longman Storytelling Conference!
Longman invited three professional storytellers to Hong Kong to present at the event. The speakers were:
Roger Jenkins
Richard Martin
Cathy Spagnoli

Feedback from Participants:
[I have learnt] how storytelling can be used in almost any situation, even if one or two words have to be taught, they can be turned into a story. [The event] made me review my whole teaching method.
The conference was useful for my professional development because it was creative and imaginative. I have learnt how to add lots of elements into our stories and how to begin and end a story in a different way.
The conference helped me to be more effective in teaching through stories. I have learnt a lot but the most important is that students can learn in a fun way, get involved in the story and be motivated.
I've never thought I can teach/revise grammar in storytelling. It's an extremely new idea for me.
It was useful for my personal growth; I wrote and thought a lot in the workshop.
I have gathered great ideas and will take these back to use. I learnt that I could help students become creative without being afraid of what they write.
I have learnt a lot indeed but the most I like is sign language [from Cathy's workshop]; it's new for me at least!
It is inspiring! I learnt that I had to make the story 'my story' before I actually deliver it to the listeners.
Cathy was very creative in teaching us. Yes, I have learnt how to make interesting props with paper, and also using hands to tell a story.
I am very inspired to the way that Richard presented how to teach grammar in a fun way.

Mr. Jenkins is really a great storyteller. Thank you Longman for giving me the chance to learn something from him. Thank you.
